John at the SWP shop

Journeyman pattern maker John Groth grew up in Milwaukee in a family with a combined 100 years of experience in the tooling industry. He learned the pattern making trade in the early 1980’s at the largest pattern shop in the country at the time and further honed his skills in the aerospace industry.

An avid outdoorsman, he moved to New Mexico in 1993 for the fantastic year-round recreational opportunities and founded Southwest Pattern Works the same year to serve the needs of local industry and foundries across the West. Starting with bench-built wood patterns, he quickly realized the advantages of fully machined tooling and added cnc machining centers and the latest 3D modeling and CAM software to leverage those technologies.
